01 May 96 - Price Increase On Bridge Leads To Fresh Protests

At midnight, the Summer prices came into force on the Skye Bridge. The one way price for a car crossing the Bridge increased from £4.30 to £5.20.

To protest at the price increases, SKAT held a Freedom Run at midnight. Over 20 new protestors were charged with non payment of toll, increasing the number of non-payment incidents to over one thousand.

A spokeswoman for SKAT said "this iniquitous toll continues to increase, threatening the livelihood of the island, discouraging tourists from visiting the Isle and bringing misery to all".
